As a mom of four girls, I recognize the importance of breastfeeding, but also the challenges that can happen during the journey. I have had many ups and downs as a breastfeeding mom, including low supply as a result of a C-section and complications with my first daughter, followed by a picture-perfect 2-year breastfeeding journey with my second daughter, then a long-unresolved case of vasospasms and Reynaud's Phenomenon with my third daughter. Finally, after battling severe oversupply with my last daughter, she and I went on to have a breastfeeding journey of 32 months. Consecutively, I breastfed for 7 years and 2 months! During those years, I had many people supporting me and I wasn't afraid to ask for help. My sisters were some of my best supporters, as well as friends, La Leche League leaders, my doctor, WIC employees, and of course, numerous IBCLC's.
Were there times I wanted to quit? Absolutely! I think it is very normal to want to give up when faced with something challenging. Add in postpartum hormones and lack of sleep and you have the perfect storm for breastfeeding challenges to happen. That's where the idea of BRAVE BREASTFEEDING came to me. BRAVE stands for Breastfeeding Resources and Verified Expertise, as well as how brave you have to be to face challenges you may have along the journey to breastfeed your child.
